Bill would always refer to the Night Journey team as his dream team. The more I learned about Bill and his work, the more I grew to appreciate what an honor it was that he thought of us that way.

A month after we finished the exhibits-only version of The Night Journey, and a month before its inaugural exhibition at the SIGGRAPH Art Gallery, we gathered at the home of Scott Fisher, the chair of the USC Cinema's, Interactive Media Division. Bill asked for the meeting. He explained that on the Summer solstice he made a drawing for each of us.

The bird is drawn over the landscape that I built for the videogame.
The Bird of Vision exists at once in both the darkness and the light. But if your glance becomes a gaze, you’ll know what Bill sees. The bird's beak is turned towards the light.
I now see the drawing as the souvenir of his real gift - optimism. Whenever I find myself in darkness I reflect on that moment.
